Is This Jose Canesco Championship Ring Worth Nearly $100,000?

September 12, 2015

With championship ring prices climbing for iconic athletes, is this championship ring worth close to the asking price?

Jose Canesco Championship Ring

A few years ago I would have laughed at this pricing. While I would not pay anywhere near the $100,000 asking price, perhaps the seller is not so crazy with his current eBay offering.

Two months ago, William Perry’s supposedly original Super Bowl XX ring, sold at auction for $203,150.00. Like Perry, Canseco will never find himself in the Hall of Fame. And like Perry, Canseco is best known for other matters than strictly what happens on the playing field.

The Canseco 1988 American League championship ring looks authentic and comes with a personally signed document from Canseco. The seller even shows pictures of him hanging out with Canseco.

Do keep in mind that other players have signed documents stating a championship ring was original and authentic and sometimes it turns out, one or both of those promises weren’t true.

I am not saying that the Canseco championship ring is not original or authentic, I’m just pointing out the perils and reality that us championship ring collectors face all the time.

While the eBay auction has a “or best offer” option, we have no idea what the seller will realistically take to sell the championship ring.

Another factor that could hurt the value of this ring is that it’s not a World Series Championship ring, as the heavily favored A’s lost to the Dodgers in five games.

However, 1988 was a very special year for Canseco – In April 1988, Canseco guaranteed he would hit at least 40 home runs and also steal at least 40 bases. He went on that season to hit 42 home runs and did steal 40 bases to become the first player in MLB history to hit the 40-40 mark in one season.

Furthermore he was the 1988 MLB Home run and RBI leader, a sliver slugger winner and the AL MVP in 1988.

Gee, if the A’s had won that World Series and the seller was offering the 1998 Canseco World Series ring, imagine what he could ask for that ring?

Please remember, I buy championship rings, so let’s talk if you would like to sell your championship ring.

Where is this huge 1959 World Series Ring?

July 22, 2015

Searching for new content for my Championship Ring blog, I stumbled upon this picture of a huge World Series ring.   What in the world is this?

Dodger World Series Ring

After googling “huge World series rings” I came up with nothing…

Any readers of this championship ring blog know anything about the location or story behind this Dodgers gigantic World Series ring?

The huge replica, is a 1959 or 1963 World Series ring.   The Dodgers, having recently moved from Brooklyn, won the World Series both of those seasons.

While the replica World Series ring looks to be very accurate, both the 1959 and 1963 World Series rings were made in white gold, not yellow gold.

Both World Series rings featured the same top and the same shank with a baseball and two baseball bats as shown in the picture above.

One of my favorite features of these two World Series rings is that the recipient’s own autograph (in their handwriting) is presented on the sweet spot of the baseball.

Ironically, the other shank proudly proclaims the year, so had the photograph been taken from a different angle, we would know what year this World Series ring is.

And it would be very cool to know what player is represented in the sweet spot of the baseball on this giant championship ring.

If anyone knows where this ring is (or rings, if the location plays tribute to additional Championship Rings), and the story behind it, I will follow up this blog with additional information and give the contributor full credit.

Meanwhile, please remember I buy normal size championship rings so please let me know if you have any to sell.

Here Come The 2000 New York Yankees World Series Rings

July 21, 2015

The New York Yankees gave away replica 2000 Yankee World Series Rings this week, before the start of their home game:

2000 Yankee World Series Ring

While no one will confuse this replica 2000 World Series ring with the real ones, it’s a nice giveaway and looks no worse than those knockoffs for sale on ebay from China.

If you want one, these replica World Series rings should be popping up on ebay this week and the longer you wait to get one, the lower you will typically pay.

Here’s a story you may not know: Real 2000 Yankee World Series rings are extremely rare and go for a hefty premium compared to Yankee World Series rings from 1996 and 1998.

The reason for this is that when the Yankees handed out 1996 World Series rings, they presented many employees with a similar ring to what the players received. The employee rings lacked a large centered diamond, but otherwise, the World Series rings were identical.

Bench coach, Don Zimmer, who was credited with helping manager Joe Torre with baseball moves throughout the season and playoffs, was incensed when he received his World Series ring and learned it was lacking the center diamond.   He never forgave George Steinbrenner for this.

In the late 90s eBay was just getting going, a few of 1996 World Series rings were sold by Yankee employees on the auction web site.

George Steinbrenner was quite angry about this and by the time 1999 and later 2000 World Series rings were given out, the Yankees had cut down the number of employees who received championship rings.

While the 1999 World Series rings were given to some staff, the 2000 ring was given to even less staff and is a very hard to get ring.

Please remember, I buy World Series rings, so if you would like to discuss selling your championship ring, please let me know.

George Steinbrenner Yankee World Series Rings No Longer on Display

June 23, 2015

On my first visit to Yankee stadium this season, my first stop is always to the amazing Yankee museum located on the second floor.   I see that a fan-favorite exhibit was no longer there:

George Steinbrenner Yankee World Series Rings

The rings above were George Steinbrenner’s personal collection of Yankee World Series rings.

I always found it strange that every single World Series ring and every American League Championship series ring (awarded when a team looses in the World Series) was on exhibit except for the 1981 Yankee Championship ring.   In 1981 the Yankees lost in six games to the Los Angles Dodgers in the World Series.

For those who are not familiar with that Yankee championship ring, the top, is exactly the same as the 1976 American League Championship ring shown above.

Perhaps the ring was lost or misplaced.

For Championship ring enthusiasts, there are still some popular attractions at the museum.   Balfour, maker of every single Yankee championship ring after they replaced original manufacturer Dieges & Clust in the late 1940s, recreated every single Yankee World Series ring for the museum.

Balfour, even reproduced the championship watch from 1923 and has it on display. This is the only time the Yankees won a World Series and were not presented with a championship ring.

An interesting note: many fake Yankee rings from 1949, and apparently, the authentic Balfour salesman sample on display at the museum, have the completely wrong shank. Balfour no longer has the original mold or a copy of that shank, so they use the more standard generic shank that evolved in the 1950s on the 1949 World Series ring.

Later this week, I will show you the really cool championship ring that was added this year to the museum exhibit, and if you are like me, you have probably never seen this championship ring before!

I buy championship rings, please let me know if you have any you would like to sell.
