Collecting Guitars and Super Bowl Rings

March 15, 2015

Jim Irsay is the owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts. He’s becoming more well known for acquiring guitars than Super Bowl rings.

Indianapolis Colts Championship Ring

Irsay owns one Super Bowl ring – from 2006 and also possesses a 2009 AFC championship ring. He’s wearing the 2009 championship ring in the photo above, while playing a guitar he purchased that was Jerry Garcia’s main guitar, known as the “Tiger” guitar.

I have no idea why he’s not wearing his Super Bowl XLI ring, perhaps it’s too big and heavy when he’s playing guitar.

Irsay’s had some better years lately than his Colts team. In 2013 Irsay acquired an instrument originally owned by the Beatles, a pristine 1959 Gibson Les Paul and an ultra rare 1939 Martin D-45.

This year he was in the news, acquiring a Les Paul guitar owned and played by Les himself, and the guitar John Lenon used in recording “Paperback Writer”.

Irsay owns around 175 – 200 guitars, many of them are quite famous or were owned by famous musicians. He once paid nearly $1 million for a single guitar, and doesn’t sound like someone who’s about to let go of his rock ‘n’ roll souvenirs. His goal is to grow his collection to 1,000 pieces.

In case you’re wondering, Irsay plays his guitars.

Championship ring enthusiasts better hope (me included) that Irsay doesn’t get into collecting other people’s championship rings, since he seldom looses an item at auction that he wants.

I buy championship rings all the time! If you want to sell a championship ring, let me know!

The Return of Super Bowl Ring Humor

March 9, 2015

How timely is this tweet? No NFL team has made more off season moves this month than the Philadelphia Eagles. Are they getting closer to finally getting a Super Bowl ring?

Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl ring

I’ve seen this photo before, it’s made the rounds on Twitter for months. I’m not piling on the Eagles, so Philly fans, please don’t need to make me a pubic enemy #1.   I’m just here to blog about Championship rings.

Has Chip Kelly has gone from “mad genius” to just flat out mad? Time will tell, my gut feeling tells me that many of these moves will back-fire. With the signing of quarterback Mark Sanchez, and the poorly kept secret of their interest in quarterback Marcus Mariota, things are only going to get more interesting.

Hats off the person who photo-shopped this Super Bowl ring. Hopefully someday the Eagles can actually win a Super Bowl ring.

Please remember that I buy championship rings. If you wish to sell your championship ring, please text, call or email me.

Robert Kraft Tells Fox Business Network that the New Super Bowl ring is in the works

March 7, 2015

From the interview, it sounds like Kraft is out to make a humongous ring; quite possibly larger than his colossal Super Bowl XXXIX masterpiece.

New England Patriots Super Bowl rings

Shown above: The three Super Bowl rings belonging to the New England Patriots – all won under the stewardship of Kraft, Head Coach Bill Belichick, and quarterback Tom Brady.

New England Patriots team owner and CEO, Robert Kraft was a guest on the Fox Business Network on Friday and revealed that the new Super Bowl ring is in the works. “We’re in the process now, a number of companies are working on design of the ring and we’ll have a big party in my backyard in June and present them, and hopefully have a lot of fun with that. You never know if it’s going to happen again, so you like to make it special.”

Although Diamond Cutters International has lobbied heavily to be awarded the task of making the next Patriots Super Bowl ring, it’s a safe bet that Kraft will remain with Jostens. Jostens has made more super bowl rings than any other manufacturer and has made the three Patriots winning Super Bowl rings.

I buy Super Bowl rings. If you are looking to sell your Super Bowl ring or championship ring, please contact me.

A Fistful of Championship Ring Bling

March 4, 2015

This picture recently showed up on Twitter. All those Patriot haters can have fun with this tweet if you google the recipient’s last name and “Patriots”.

New England Patriots Super Bowl Rings

Whether you love the New England Patriots or despise them, if you’re a championship ring enthusiast, you have to admire this photograph.

It’s not the easy to decipher the details of each ring, but after studying the photograph, you can see all five championship rings of the Tom Brady / Bill Belichick era.

Soon there will be sixth championship ring, and I suppose that will create a new challenge for long time Patriot employees to figure out how to wear each one at the same time. Perhaps the latest edition can go on the thumb.

The employee in the picture received player version rings, not smaller front office rings. If he was trying to make a statement and show off his bling he should have prominently displayed the Super Bowl ring on the far left more prominently. That ring is the Super Bowl XXXIX ring and is the largest Super Bowl ring ever made.

The next championship ring, (second from the left) is the 2007 AFC ring, awarded when the Pats lost the Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

The ring in the middle is the first Super Bowl ring Brady and Belichick won, the XXXVI ring.

The ring second from the right is the championship ring from Super Bowl XXXVIII.

The last ring, all the way on the far right is barley visible. It’s the last ring the Pats received before winning the most recent Super Bowl. The ring is the 2011 AFC championship ring. The clue to identifying it (besides being the only one left) is the visible “MHK”. Those initials are a special tribute to Myra Kraft. Myra passed in 2011 and was Robert Kraft’s wife.

Please remember, I buy super bowl rings. If you wish to sell a Super Bowl ring, please let me know.

Diamond Cutters International is one of four companies bidding to create the next Super Bowl ring

January 28, 2015

Could one of these Championship Ring designs wind up being the next Super Bowl ring?

Super Bowl XLIX Rings

Yes, one of these two Championship Ring designs shown above could be the next Super Bowl ring, if Houston based Diamond Cutters International   wins the selection process.

Fred Cuellar, CEO of Diamond Cutters International (or DCI for short) boasts: “My expertise in diamonds; I’m considered one of the best diamond experts in the world,” Cuellar said. “So to get to design these little miniature trophies for these incredible athletes is such an incredible honor.”

According to the site, Click2houston.com, they wrote “Diamond Cutters International has designed four Super Bowl rings and has been involved in the process with more than a dozen rings.”.

According to my many years of research and personally owning every single Super Bowl ring with the exception of three that were all made by Jostens, I am sure that Diamond Cutters International designed and produced only one or two super bowl rings that were chosen to be made officially for the teams – The Denver Broncos Super Bowl XXXII ring and possibly, the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XXX ring.

Of all the championship rings I have ever seen, in my humble opinion (and many in the jewelry and championship ring market-place agree), the design and making of the shanks (the sides) of those two championship rings were way below the standards of Jostens and Balfour.

A company by the name of “Diamond Masters” supposedly made the Cowboys Super Bowl XXX ring, and I am not sure if these two companies with similar names are connected.

Why am I not sure who made the rings? It seems like a simple thing to find out but it’s not. With the exception of these two Super Bowl rings, every other ring manufacturer who has made a Super Bowl ring has proudly stamped their name inside the ring. Ironically, the Super Bowl XXX and XXXII rings are only stamped “14K”,   nothing else is stamped on the inside.

The Following year, after the Broncos repeated as World Champions, they awarded the Super Bowl ring contract to Jostens. Perhaps it’s possible they were not thrilled with the quality of the ring sides. In my opinion, the ring sides were substantially improved when Jostens made the Super Bowl XXXIII ring for the Broncos.
