Collecting Guitars and Super Bowl Rings

March 15, 2015

Jim Irsay is the owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts. He’s becoming more well known for acquiring guitars than Super Bowl rings.

Indianapolis Colts Championship Ring

Irsay owns one Super Bowl ring – from 2006 and also possesses a 2009 AFC championship ring. He’s wearing the 2009 championship ring in the photo above, while playing a guitar he purchased that was Jerry Garcia’s main guitar, known as the “Tiger” guitar.

I have no idea why he’s not wearing his Super Bowl XLI ring, perhaps it’s too big and heavy when he’s playing guitar.

Irsay’s had some better years lately than his Colts team. In 2013 Irsay acquired an instrument originally owned by the Beatles, a pristine 1959 Gibson Les Paul and an ultra rare 1939 Martin D-45.

This year he was in the news, acquiring a Les Paul guitar owned and played by Les himself, and the guitar John Lenon used in recording “Paperback Writer”.

Irsay owns around 175 – 200 guitars, many of them are quite famous or were owned by famous musicians. He once paid nearly $1 million for a single guitar, and doesn’t sound like someone who’s about to let go of his rock ‘n’ roll souvenirs. His goal is to grow his collection to 1,000 pieces.

In case you’re wondering, Irsay plays his guitars.

Championship ring enthusiasts better hope (me included) that Irsay doesn’t get into collecting other people’s championship rings, since he seldom looses an item at auction that he wants.

I buy championship rings all the time! If you want to sell a championship ring, let me know!

New Photoshopped Super Bowl XLIX Ring Debuts on Twitter

March 13, 2015

The championship ring is stunning, obviously modified from a front office 2004 Super Bowl ring.

**photo description here**

Could we be looking at the new 2014, Super Bowl XLIX ring that will be awarded to the New England players, coaches and employees in a few months?

It’s highly doubtful this or a similar version will be presented to team players and coaches. The reason is that this championship ring would be substantially smaller in size than New England’s last winning ring – the 2004 Super Bowl ring.

The 2004 Super Bowl ring was gigantic, weighing in a little over 100 grams, in 14K white solid gold. Some front office employees received a non gold version (same color as the player’s rings) with imitation diamonds that looked very similar to the ring shown above. Obviously, that championship ring had three large imitation diamonds and Lombardi trophies, not four as shown above.

Perhaps, if the Patriots decide to offer a smaller front office ring again this year, the super bowl ring shown above could be   very similar to what is ultimately presented to front office employees.

Championship ring collectors are looking forward to the new rings, if they are anything like what Rob Kraft has presented in the past, the new championship rings will be spectacular.

I buy championship rings. If you wish to sell any championship rings, please contact me.

The Championship Rings From Super Bowl XII

March 10, 2015

Continuing the blogs on the two championship rings awarded from every Super Bowl, here’s the next pair; an inside look at the two championship rings from Super Bowl XII:

Super Bowl XII Championship rings

As I’ve written many times, I hope you will accept my apology that the photo contains my website address. If I did not include it in the picture, other notorious web sites would steal my pictures and eBay sellers who make those incredibly cheap replicas in China that don’t look as realistic as authentic championship rings, will use these photos to claim the pictures are of their replica championship rings!

Most of the pictures I use in this blog series of the two championship rings are from my personal championship ring collection. As you know, these championship rings are extremely rare in the collecting community and are so rarely (or perhaps never) photographed in pairs from specific Super Bowls. So I hope you will excuse my on-going attempt to keep these photos from being misused and misrepresented. When I do use a picture found on the internet, I promise, I won’t place my website over the picture.

The ring on the left is the Dallas Cowboys second winning Super Bowl Ring from their 1977 season. Like the Raiders, the Cowboys made an effort to keep their championship ring theme the same. Later on, when they won the three Super Bowls in four seasons in the 90′s they radically changed the design of their Super Bowl Rings).

The Cowboys 1977 Super Bowl ring was designed and manufactured by Jostens in 10K solid white gold, the ring contains two large diamonds and smaller diamonds that give the ring some beautiful bling. The ring weighs 43 grams.

Like so many other winning Super Bowl rings, the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XII ring is extremely rare and in high demand by Cowboy fans and highly coveted by championship ring collectors. Very few of these rings have made it to the collecting community and the few that have, sold for a lot of money.

Harvey Martin, the co-MVP of Super Bowl XII, just had his ring sold at auction recently. The ring sold for $71,700.00.

In a tradition that continues to this day, the team that loses the Super Bowl is still recognized as a champion of their respective conference. I don’t know of any Denver Broncos rings besides the one I own that have hit the market place. This ring was made by Jostens in 10K gold. It weighs 36 grams. Boy, talk about a rare ring!

Please remember that I buy super bowl rings and buy championship rings too, so do let me know if you have a championship ring you would like to sell.

Robert Kraft Tells Fox Business Network that the New Super Bowl ring is in the works

March 7, 2015

From the interview, it sounds like Kraft is out to make a humongous ring; quite possibly larger than his colossal Super Bowl XXXIX masterpiece.

(Click picture below for a larger picture)

New England Patriots Super Bowl rings

Shown above: The three Super Bowl rings belonging to the New England Patriots – all won under the stewardship of Kraft, Head Coach Bill Belichick, and quarterback Tom Brady.

New England Patriots team owner and CEO, Robert Kraft was a guest on the Fox Business Network on Friday and revealed that the new Super Bowl ring is in the works. “We’re in the process now, a number of companies are working on design of the ring and we’ll have a big party in my backyard in June and present them, and hopefully have a lot of fun with that. You never know if it’s going to happen again, so you like to make it special.”

Although Diamond Cutters International has lobbied heavily to be awarded the task of making the next Patriots Super Bowl ring, it’s a safe bet that Kraft will remain with Jostens. Jostens has made more super bowl rings than any other manufacturer and has made the three Patriots winning Super Bowl rings.

A Fistful of Championship Ring Bling

March 4, 2015

This picture recently showed up on Twitter. All those Patriot haters can have fun with this tweet if you google the recipient’s last name and “Patriots”.

New England Patriots Super Bowl Rings

Whether you love the New England Patriots or despise them, if you’re a championship ring enthusiast, you have to admire this photograph.

It’s not the easy to decipher the details of each ring, but after studying the photograph, you can see all five championship rings of the Tom Brady / Bill Belichick era.

Soon there will be sixth championship ring, and I suppose that will create a new challenge for long time Patriot employees to figure out how to wear each one at the same time. Perhaps the latest edition can go on the thumb.

The employee in the picture received player version rings, not smaller front office rings. If he was trying to make a statement and show off his bling he should have prominently displayed the Super Bowl ring on the far left more prominently. That ring is the Super Bowl XXXIX ring and is the largest Super Bowl ring ever made.

The next championship ring, (second from the left) is the 2007 AFC ring, awarded when the Pats lost the Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

The ring in the middle is the first Super Bowl ring Brady and Belichick won, the XXXVI ring.

The ring second from the right is the championship ring from Super Bowl XXXVIII.

The last ring, all the way on the far right is barley visible. It’s the last ring the Pats received before winning the most recent Super Bowl. The ring is the 2011 AFC championship ring. The clue to identifying it (besides being the only one left) is the visible “MHK”. Those initials are a special tribute to Myra Kraft. Myra passed in 2011 and was Robert Kraft’s wife.

Please remember, I buy super bowl rings. If you wish to sell a Super Bowl ring, please let me know.
