How did Jerry acquire so many championship rings?

Jerry West was a professional basketball player who played his entire professional 14 year career for the L.A. Lakers.

Jerry was also the co-captain of the 1960 U.S. Olympic gold medal team in Rome. The entire team was inducted as a unit into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

West had a very impressive NBA career. Playing the guard position, he was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams, and was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times. West was the All-Star MVP in 1972, the same year that he won the only title of his career.

West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with mind-blowing 46.3. He was also a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams (one second, which was then followed by four firsts), which were introduced when he was 32 years old.

Having played in nine NBA Finals, he is also the only player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP despite being on the losing team (1969). West was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and voted as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996.

After his playing career, West was head coach of the Lakers for three years, leading Los Angeles into the playoffs each year and earning a Western Conference Finals berth once.

West was named general manager of the Lakers prior to the 1982–83 NBA season. Under his reign, the Lakers won a whopping six championship rings.

In 2002, West became general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies and helped the franchise win their first-ever playoff berth. For his contributions, West won the NBA Executive of the Year Award twice, once with the Lakers (1995) and then once with the Grizzlies (2004).

Phil Jackson Gladly Shows a Twitter Follower All 13 of His NBA Championship Rings When Asked To See Two

July 23, 2014

The Legendary coach shows a Twitter follower all of his bling, earned as a Coach and player by posting this photo:

Phil Jackson and his 13 NBA championship rings

Six of the rings were earned coaching the Chicago Bulls and five are from his coaching days with the Los Angeles Lakers. The two on the bottom are from his playing days as a defensive-minded reserve forward on the 1970 and 1973 New York Knicks teams.

Notice how organized Phil is with his rings: each era of his career is neatly arranged and the rings are sorted in chronological order.

For many NBA types, rings won as a player would represent the pinnacle of achievement in the sport; however in Jackson’s case, though, they serve as sort of a precursor and accent mark to the story of his later coaching accomplishments. As such — and also because they aren’t quite as flashy as what came later — it seems like we don’t often see Jackson sporting the rings he won during his playing career.

One Twitter follower named Sean, wondered what they looked like:

Jackson, who has immersed himself wholeheartedly into social media, was happy to oblige, and did so in a funny sort-of-way:

“here’s the best I can do…the 2 Knick rings are in the front of the picture,” Jackson tweeted.

Looks like Sean and the rest of Phil’s followers received a wonderful photo – and as usual with Phil – more than was asked for.

Lakers Security Guard Accused of Stealing Championship Rings

December 13, 2013

A security guard is accused of stealing Lakers championship rings and nearly $20,000 worth of gift cards from the team’s training facility in El Segundo, authorities said.

**photo description here**

Eddie J. Monterroso was arrested outside the training facility Tuesday as he left work, according to the El Segundo Police Department.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office on Thursday filed felony charges of burglary and grand theft against the 23-year-old security guard.

Investigators on Dec. 5 began probing a theft from the Lakers training facility including championship rings from the Lakers’ 2009 and 2010 wins, and $20,000 in gift cards, police said.

Detectives said they found “evidence of the theft” and two championship rings at Monterroso’s Inglewood home.

“The person who did steal is probably a Laker fan and wanted to keep it for himself,” Sgt. Mike Gill, with the El Segundo Police Department, said. “I would imagine stealing a Laker ring would be very difficult to pawn or sell off.”

Monterroso had worked as a security guard at the Lakers’ training facility for about a year when he was arrested, police said. He was third-party contractor hired by Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG).

Police are also investigating a photo posted to what is believed to be Monterroso’s Facebook page showing the Los Angeles Kings’ Stanley Cup championship on a finger, possibly the suspect’s.

The Kings also practice at the facility where Monterroso worked.

While most retired athletes wear their championship rings, Johnson shared that he has never worn them because of a childhood experience that involved him losing a watch his family bought for him.

When asked about his favorite ring, Magic quickly mentioned the 1985 championship when the Lakers finally beat Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics.
