The Top Secret Championship Ring

June 21, 2018

Is the latest New England Championship ring really under wraps, a move mandated by the Organization?

Patriots 2017 AFC championship ring

Sorry for the really poor-quality photo shown above of the Patriots 2017 AFC Championship ring.

The ring was awarded (if that’s the proper wording in this instance) a week or two ago to players, coaches, and team staff.

No press releases, or quality photos were issued by the team, or the company that was chosen to design and manufacture the Patriots latest championship ring.

Not a single player, coach, or front office employee, photographed the championship ring and posted it on Twitter, Instagram, or even facebook. All except one former player, no longer associated with the team. And it was reported that even he removed the championship photos from his Twitter account.

The former player and his 2017 AFC championship ring is shown above. It belongs to Brandin Cooks, now with the Rams.

Eventually one of these championship rings will find their way to an auction house and much better photos will someday be available. However for the time being, it looks like championship ring enthusiasts will not have a better image to view.

Special thanks to Sam M. a Patriot fan from Boston, and loyal reader of this championship ring blog. Sam sent me a photo of the ring. I commented to him that compared to the beautiful AFC championship ring the Patriots issued after the 2011 season, when they lost to the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI, their newest AFC ring was not as nice. Perhaps the organization had lost their enthusiasm in designing runner up rings. Maybe losing a Super Bowl after two recent Super Bowl victories in 2014 and 2016 made a loss unacceptable.

Sam thought differently, not seeing the new championship rings as inferior to their last AFC ring. He said “it’s not less bling as much as its different color bling. The Pats have started to shift in a little different direction with blue background instead of all diamond background. The SB 51 ring was the first one the Pats did with that blue background, and I think our next few will be like that, assuming they happen with this ownership. But to me it still looks pretty loud and pretty big for a conference ring. Probably a little less loud then 2011 but I don’t think it’s an intentional step back I think it’s just there effort to make them all not to look exactly the same”.

Sam added “The SB 51 ring looks a lot like the SB 39 ring just with a blue background; the 2017 AFC ring looks a lot like 2007 AFC ring just with a blue background.”

Thanks for your contributions Sam! They are very much appreciated.

LeGarrette Blount’s Three Super Bowl Rings

June 19, 2018

In a class-move, Tom Brady congratulated Blount in obtaining his newest Super Bowl ring:

LeGarrette Blount three super bowl rings and comparing the eagles and patriots super bowl rings

Sometimes it takes a very long time for championship ring enthusiasts to finally see how a new championship ring stacks up against other recent championship ring issues.

In this case, we now know that the Eagles Super Bowl LII is quite large but nowhere near as massive as the Patriots last two Super Bowl rings.

Don’t blame the Eagles for making a smaller championship ring than the Patriots. No NFL team makes as massive Super Bowl rings as the Patriots do, and the NFL has specific guidelines for how large and blinged-out a team’s first Super Bowl ring should be.

LaGarrette with three Super Bowl rings, is now only two behind Tom Brady in that department. When he posted his three championship rings on Instagram this week with the photo shown above, Brady messaged back with “You have EARNED them my brother!”.

Nice move by Tom Brady, and congratulations to LeGarrette Blount.

Eagles Fan Super Bowl Rings Might Be Nicest Fan Championship Ring Ever

June 18, 2018

Jostens is offering a limited edition Eagles Fan Super Bowl ring and it’s almost as impressive as the player version:

eagles fan super bowl ring

The fan version championship ring collection pieces are reasonably priced, and start at just $649.00.

The version shown above is the Eagles limited edition and this offering is as close as you can get to a player’s version championship ring. It contains 2.5 carrots of real diamonds and you can get your name on the side of the championship ring, just like the player version.

The fan version does not come with the diamond Lombardi Trophy as the player version has, but still, it’s a very impressive championship ring.

For comparison, here’s the player version:

I suggest you hurry if you want to buy this fan Super Bowl ring, they are just releasing 127 of them which is the total of the jersey numbers in the Philly Special (88+30+9=127).

Introducing the Eagles First Winning Super Bowl Ring

June 15, 2018

The Philadelphia Eagles finished their off-season program on Thursday afternoon and then celebrated their Super Bowl victory one last time at the their championship ring ceremony on Thursday evening. Here’s their new Super Bowl rings:

Head coach Doug Pederson said the team had until 12:01 a.m. to enjoy their Super Bowl rings and their title before turning the page to the 2018 season. The Eagles are now off until late July.

Here are Details of the Eagles LII Super Bowl ring

  • It is made of 10-karat solid white gold with a total of 219 diamonds and 17 green sapphires. It has a total weight of 9.15 carats.

  • The top of the Super Bowl ring has an Eagles logo on top of a Lombardi Trophy. There are 52 pavé-set diamonds within the Eagle head to signify Super Bowl 52. The base of the trophy has 52 pavé-set diamonds for the 13 regular-season victories. The top has three diamonds for the number of postseason victory. The words “WORLD CHAMPIONS” are at the top and bottom of the ring’s face.
  • The bezel of the ring has a waterfall of 127 diamonds. That’s not a random number — it’s the sum of the jersey numbers three main players in the Philly Special: Corey Clement (No. 3o), Trey Burton (No. 88), and Nick Foles (No. 9).
  • There are four green sapphires at the corners of the base to symbolize the team’s four NFL championships: 1948, 1949, 1960, and last season.
  • The left side of the ring has the player’s name and a silhouette of Lincoln Financial Field, which the team said is a tribute to the fans. The player’s number is studded with pavé-set diamonds in the middle of the field
  • The right side of the ring has the Super Bowl score and reads “We ALL WE GOT, WE ALL WE NEED” above the Super Bowl logo. That was the team’s rallying cry throughout the season. It reads “FAMILY” below the logo.
  • The bottom of the outer band reads “FLY EAGLES FLY” to recognize the team’s fight song. The top of the inside arbor has the score of the three postseason victories and an underdog mask, which players wore after upsets in the playoffs.
  • The bottom of the inside arbor has each player’s signature.

Moving quickley, (even before the Super Bowl parade) team owner Jeffrey Lurie had a team meeting to discuss the design of their championship rings. The players told Lurie that the “bigger and the blingier, the better.”

“That’s what we did,” Lurie said.

Congratulations to the Eagles organization and their fans.

  • Redskins Finally Award ’87 Replacement Players Their Own Super Bowl Rings

    June 13, 2018

The Washington Redskins noted back in March, that they would award the 1987 replacement players that helped the team win the ’87 Super Bowl their very own championship ring. They made good on that promise this week:

washington Redskins replacement players super bowl rings

By going 3-0 during the strike, the replacement players provided the Redskins a chance for their second Super Bowl win. Following the strike-shortened 1987 season, the Redskins demolished the Denver Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII. The organization didn’t award the replacement players Super Bowl rings until now.

The reason for the omission is because almost all of those replacement players were cut after the strike ended. However by going 3-0 during the strike, they helped the team earn a spot in the playoffs. While the replacement players did receive a playoff purse, they didn’t get championship rings.

“The Scabs,” as they were nick-named got attention again from an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on them, “Year of the Scab.” The documentary told their story and the hardships they went through during and after the strike, and much of the film focused on them not getting Super Bowl rings.

After “Year of the Scab” was released in April 2017, many calls and social media postings were made to honor the Redskins replacement players who put the team in a position to make their historic Super Bowl title run.

In March, team owner Dan Snyder relented due to pressure, saying: “The 3-0 record of the Redskins replacement players was part of the remarkable success of the 1987 Washington Redskins. Their contributions are part of Redskins history and represent an integral reason why a Lombardi Trophy from the 1987 campaign resides in our facility today. Thanks in part to the generosity of our partners on this project, we are happy to honor these players for their role in that World Championship.”

Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams helped to honor the team. Williams was a proponent of honoring the replacement players that started the season off for the Redskins, saying in the documentary that “it’s unfortunate that those guys didn’t share in the ring because they did put us in position to go forward.”

Now, after thirty years, the replacement players can finally share it.

A note to all those championship ring collectors and enthusiasts reading this blog: The original Super Bowl XXII rings were made by Tiffany and Company. The new Super Bowl rings appear to be made by Baron. It looks like Baron attempted to recreate the original style of the championship ring, but did clean up the sloppy and poorly diamond shaped Lombardi trophies on each side of the ring. So will the new Super Bowl rings be worth more money because they look nicer, or less money because they are not the original?

    Only time will tell.
