ESPN Blows Opportunity For an Amazing Championship Ring Magazine Cover

March 20, 2015

Back in October of 2011, ESPN Magazine published the edition shown below.   Why did this multi-billion company use cheap Chinese replica rings instead of real championship rings?

Boston Championship Rings

During the last 15 years, the city of Boston has been on an amazing run.

Both the Patriots and Red Sox been awarded three championship rings each (soon to be four when the Patriots receive their newest super bowl rings).

Besides these seven winning championship rings, the Patriots also received two runner up Super Bowl rings, called AFC championship rings.

Not be left out, the Celtics and Bruins each won a title and were awarded championship rings during this fifteen year Boston run.

ESPN Magazine had the right idea when they published a story on all of these Boston championships, but boy did they blow this magazine cover.

Instead of using real championship rings, which could have resulted in a stunning photograph, ESPN went with cheap Chinese replica rings, found for sale on ebay for less than $100.00 each.

Two of the championship rings, the Red Sox and Bruins offerings are not even close to the authentic championship ring versions that were awarded. The Celtics ring is closer to the authentic version. While it’s squared-shaped in the photo, the authentic 2003 Championship Celtic ring was more of a rectangle and much larger than the cheap knockoff shown.

Finally, the only ring that looks right is the Patriots ring. However, it too is a cheap knockoff and the design turns out to be completely wrong. ESPN should have included a Super Bowl ring. Instead, they went with a bizarre ring that is a copy of the AFC championship ring from 2007 when the Giants stunned the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

What makes the Pats ring so awful is that it contains the words “World Champions” and “04″.   If this ring was supposed to be a version of the Super Bowl XXXIX ring, we all know how huge that ring was and what it looked like.   If you are unfamiliar with the Super Bowl XXXIX ring, you can search for that ring using the search tools on the right side of this blog.

ESPN really blew this magazine photo. Had it been done correctly with the real rings, the picture would have been a historic photo and highly sought after by championship ring enthusiasts and fans of the Boston teams.

Please remember that I collect championship rings. If you would like to sell your championship ring, please call, email or text me.

The Championship Rings From Super Bowl XIII

March 17, 2015

Continuing my blogs on the two championship rings awarded from every Super Bowl, here’s the next gorgeous pair; an inside look at the two championship rings from Super Bowl XIII:

Super Bowl XIII Rings

The ring on the left is the Pittsburgh Steelers third winning Super Bowl Ring from their 1978 season. Unlike the Raiders, who two seasons earlier purposely made a strong effort to keep their championship ring theme the same, the Steelers third championship ring was quite different in design from their first two rings. If you line up all 6 Steeler rings, you would be hard to find a team that has all of their championship rings so strikingly different from one another.

The Steelers 1978 Super Bowl ring was designed and manufactured by Jostens in 10K solid yellow gold, the ring contains three large diamonds and smaller diamonds that give the ring some beautiful bling. The ring weighs 42 grams.

Here’s an amazing fact about the ring – I always thought the top was kind of a random, modern-art type design. Obviously, the three large diamonds represent the three Super Bowl championships the team achieved at this point in time. However, “Hat Boy”, a poster on championship ring, recently pointed out “The “stars” on the Steelers ring are asteroids, which mimic their logo.”

I can’t believe I never realized that! Apparently, others missed that too as quite a few mentioned on the board that they did not realize it either. Another contributor mentioned that the official shape of the star is called a hypocycloid and when it’s shaped with four cusps, it’s called an asteroid.

Like so many other winning Super Bowl rings, the Steelers Super Bowl XIII ring is extremely rare and in high demand by Steeler fans and highly coveted by championship ring collectors. Very few of these rings have made it to the collecting community and the few that have, sold for a lot of money. This is one of the very few Super Bowl rings I do not own, however, I’m in advanced negotiations with someone to buy their ring and we are proceeding along with this sale.

In a tradition that continues to this day, the team that loses the Super Bowl is still recognized as a champion of their respective conference. The Cowboys super bowl ring was designed as a tribute to the Texas official state flower – the Bluebonnet. Because many collectors believe this is one of the ugliest conference championship rings, they tend to go for less money than other AFC and NFC championship rings. The Cowboys 1978 NFC ring was made by Jostens, in 10K yellow gold and weighs 35-36 grams.

Please remember – I buy super bowl rings and I buy championship rings too, so do let me know if you have a championship ring you want to sell.

Collecting Guitars and Super Bowl Rings

March 15, 2015

Jim Irsay is the owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts. He’s becoming more well known for acquiring guitars than Super Bowl rings.

Indianapolis Colts Championship Ring

Irsay owns one Super Bowl ring – from 2006 and also possesses a 2009 AFC championship ring. He’s wearing the 2009 championship ring in the photo above, while playing a guitar he purchased that was Jerry Garcia’s main guitar, known as the “Tiger” guitar.

I have no idea why he’s not wearing his Super Bowl XLI ring, perhaps it’s too big and heavy when he’s playing guitar.

Irsay’s had some better years lately than his Colts team. In 2013 Irsay acquired an instrument originally owned by the Beatles, a pristine 1959 Gibson Les Paul and an ultra rare 1939 Martin D-45.

This year he was in the news, acquiring a Les Paul guitar owned and played by Les himself, and the guitar John Lenon used in recording “Paperback Writer”.

Irsay owns around 175 – 200 guitars, many of them are quite famous or were owned by famous musicians. He once paid nearly $1 million for a single guitar, and doesn’t sound like someone who’s about to let go of his rock ‘n’ roll souvenirs. His goal is to grow his collection to 1,000 pieces.

In case you’re wondering, Irsay plays his guitars.

Championship ring enthusiasts better hope (me included) that Irsay doesn’t get into collecting other people’s championship rings, since he seldom looses an item at auction that he wants.

I buy championship rings all the time! If you want to sell a championship ring, let me know!

The Return of Super Bowl Ring Humor

March 9, 2015

How timely is this tweet? No NFL team has made more off season moves this month than the Philadelphia Eagles. Are they getting closer to finally getting a Super Bowl ring?

Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl ring

I’ve seen this photo before, it’s made the rounds on Twitter for months. I’m not piling on the Eagles, so Philly fans, please don’t need to make me a pubic enemy #1.   I’m just here to blog about Championship rings.

Has Chip Kelly has gone from “mad genius” to just flat out mad? Time will tell, my gut feeling tells me that many of these moves will back-fire. With the signing of quarterback Mark Sanchez, and the poorly kept secret of their interest in quarterback Marcus Mariota, things are only going to get more interesting.

Hats off the person who photo-shopped this Super Bowl ring. Hopefully someday the Eagles can actually win a Super Bowl ring.

Please remember that I buy championship rings. If you wish to sell your championship ring, please text, call or email me.

Robert Kraft Tells Fox Business Network that the New Super Bowl ring is in the works

March 7, 2015

From the interview, it sounds like Kraft is out to make a humongous ring; quite possibly larger than his colossal Super Bowl XXXIX masterpiece.

(Click picture below for a larger picture)

New England Patriots Super Bowl rings

Shown above: The three Super Bowl rings belonging to the New England Patriots – all won under the stewardship of Kraft, Head Coach Bill Belichick, and quarterback Tom Brady.

New England Patriots team owner and CEO, Robert Kraft was a guest on the Fox Business Network on Friday and revealed that the new Super Bowl ring is in the works. “We’re in the process now, a number of companies are working on design of the ring and we’ll have a big party in my backyard in June and present them, and hopefully have a lot of fun with that. You never know if it’s going to happen again, so you like to make it special.”

Although Diamond Cutters International has lobbied heavily to be awarded the task of making the next Patriots Super Bowl ring, it’s a safe bet that Kraft will remain with Jostens. Jostens has made more super bowl rings than any other manufacturer and has made the three Patriots winning Super Bowl rings.

I buy Super Bowl rings. If you are looking to sell your Super Bowl ring or championship ring, please contact me.
