Earlier this month, five Capitals fans got quite a surprise, when they were asked to meet at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex facility:

The hard-core fans were told their Capitals Stanley Cup championship rings had arrived from Jostens. The limited edition rings cost $12,018 each and are the closest thing a fan can get, next to a full sized Capitals’ player championship ring.

But instead of getting their championship rings from a Jostens employee, a hockey legend delivered the championship rings instead: future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin.

“What’s up, guys!” Ovechkin said as he surprised the five fans. In the video below you can see how the fans were shocked, then overjoyed and one fan even raised his fist in celebration.

“While we were waiting for Jostens, because that’s who we thought was coming, and then Ovi shows up, which is a great payoff,” Caps fan John Smallwood said. “He’s the reason we’re here.”

But the moment was not without its imperfections. After Ovechkin gave one Stanley Cup championship ring to Nick Clemens, the Caps fan had to remind Ovechkin he bought another one.

“There’s two of them,” Nick Clemens said to Ovechkin.

“TWO?!” Ovechkin said. “Sorry!”

Laughter filled the room.

After every fan had received their own championship ring, with their name personalized on it, Ovechkin had them open the boxes at the same time – the exact process the players had done when they received their championship rings.

“Seeing that man walk in with that box and give it to me personally is something I’ll never ever forget,” Clemens added.
