Here’s a Packer Super Bowl Ring on eBay That Caught My Eye

May 30, 2018

Actually the championship ring is kind of ho-hum, but it comes with that huge and rare Jostens Championship ring box:

Packers super bowl xxxi 1996 ring for sale

Why would I call a Packer’s Super Bowl XXXI ring ho-hum?

Because it’s not the huge, championship ring awarded to the players, coaches and key staff members of the 1996 team. However, the markings shown inside the ring (you can see the auction listing for yourself on eBay) indicate it is an authentic Jostens championship ring.

The Super Bowl ring being offered, is a much smaller version than the players received, but what I like about this championship ring is that it comes with the exact same wood presentation box the player’s received.

This wood presentation box was only used (as far as I can tell) that single year and is much larger than other wood presentation boxes made before or since. Jostens, who does not make the wood presentation boxes themselves, also used the exact same design for the Patriots AFC championship ring that year.

Perhaps the company that made these boxes for Jostens had issues or went out of business, or discontinued this style box. Whatever the reason, these style boxes were never seen again or used by Jostens or any other championship ring manufacturer.

According to the auction, this is a board of directors Super Bowl ring. If that was the case, I would expect that the Super Bowl ring would be a little nicer. I doubt this is a “shareholders” Super Bowl ring since if one was offered to the many shareholders of the team, I don’t think a wood presentation box, or special invitation to the award ceremony would be included in the presentation of the ring.

Perhaps it is a mid-level staff member’s Super Bowl ring, but this is only speculation.

The Best Article on Championship Rings Ever!

May 29, 2018

The outstanding publication, Sports Business Journal, did a must-read comprehensive story on the world of championship rings:

Sports business journal championship ring article

The story was published seven years ago, and I’ve never read another article that comes close to covering the topic of championship rings better.

Amanda, an MBA student from Pepperdine University, contacted me recently as she is researching championship rings and had some questions for me.

Think about that for a moment: Some people roll their eyes at us when we tell them we collect or have a huge interest in the world of championship rings. Lo and behold, this topic is now being researched at the highest academic levels!

In discussing championship rings with Amanda, I mentioned this Sports Business Journal article. My long-ago link to the article was no longer the correct place to find the item. I suggested that if she could find it (and I imagine she has a lot more research resources than I do), it would be worth her while.

Well sure enough, Amanda found a new link to this amazing article, and sent it to me.

I’d like to share it with the readers of this blog.

Thanks Amanda, and good luck with your research project!

Oklahoma man reunited with stolen championship ring 25 years later

May 24, 2018

James Fagan was taken aback when he received a text message from a stranger, who had found his championship ring:

lost championship ring found

According to Fagan, “I get off work, get this phone call from a lady that says, ‘You don’t know me but by chance, did you lose a ring?’ And I’m thinking, I don’t have jewelry, but I told her, ‘Someone broke into my house 25 years ago and stole a ring.’”

It wasn’t just any ring; it was a High School 1982 State Championship ring.

Fagan played defensive back and helped lead the Ardmore Tigers to their first championship, beating Bixby 14 to 7.

In 1992, Fagan was visiting family in Ohio when he learned that his home in Ardmore had been burglarized.

“My ring is gone. My brother, my oldest brother, I had his class ring,” Fagan said. “He’s deceased; it’s gone and my TV’s gone.”

Fagan says no suspects were ever found, and he believed both rings were gone for good.

“Over the years I never thought I’d ever see my ring again,” Fagan said. “I’d hear the other guys talk about their rings, their belt buckles and stuff like that. You get reminded.“

To this day, he doesn’t know who committed the burglary.

Fagan’s luck changed when he received that text message. “She snapped a picture of it and I’m like ‘whoa!’,” Fagan said. “So we met up in Lone Grove, and I have my championship ring. Just like that.“

The woman told Fagan that she found the ring in an abandoned house in Ringling.

Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars is Out to Lunch on his Tom Brady Super Bowl Ring Valuation

May 22, 2018

Recently, Steve Fiorillo wrote a comprehensive article that appeared on thestreet.com, estimating Tom Brady’s net worth. He relied way too heavily on Rick Harrison to give an estimate on the value of Tom Brady’s Super Bowl rings:

Rick Harrison, Pawn Stars Super Bowl rings and Tom Brady

There’s a link to the article below, but be warned, the story approaches Tom Brady’s net worth as an analysis of his assets, salary, and other perks that come along with being Tom Brady. The article is more geared for those interested in finance and investments and not really for sports memorabilia collectors, championship ring enthusiasts, or football fans.

One interesting subject found in the article was the topic of how much are Tom Brady’s Super Bowl rings worth.

Over the years we’ve seen some incredible championship rings hit the market from players and their families, such as Babe Ruth, Lawrence Taylor, Yogi Berra, Jim Brown, and Julius Erving. I’m sure there have been plenty of other incredible championship rings that I’m forgetting about at the moment.

In this part of the article, author Steve Fiorillo went with Rick Harrison’s poorly informed answer that an actual Super Bowl ring that was awarded to Tom Brady (as his one and only from that particular season) would bring the buyer at least $250,000. The words “bring the buyer” is a wise phrase, as the auction house would no-doubt get a percentage of the sale.

It sounds like in the quote below, Rick is unaware (or forgot) that a Tom Brady family Super Bowl ring that has been estimated to be about 20% smaller than Brady’s actual Super Bowl ring, recently brought $344,927.50 at auction. Brady’s actual Super Bowl ring would have sold for a heck of a lot more.

With Babe Ruth’s 1927 World Series ring having sold for over $700,000, I believe a Brady Super Bowl ring would shatter that mark.

Here’s an excerpt from the article that covers the topic of Brady’s Super Bowl rings and their value:

That’s a question without a definitive answer, but combined it would easily be somewhere in the six-digit range, and potentially in the millions. Their 2014 rings cost $36,500 each, and it’s said that a Patriots Super Bowl ring could bring in as much as $50,000 if a player is looking to sell.

But Tom Brady isn’t just another player. Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars theorized that a Tom Brady ring would bring the buyer at least $250,000, and he’s got 5 of them. Brady is, of course, not actually selling his rings anytime soon. However, those rings provide quite a bit of value. Imagine showing one of those off at a Super Bowl party.

On one side Is the players number set upon “BMO FIELD” the Argos home stadium along with the 2017 team motto “TOGETHER”.

On the other side is the Toronto skyline featuring the Grey Cup in the middle.”

According to Bardown.com: “The Argos pulled off two incredible late victories in the playoffs to capture their 17th Grey Cup title in franchise history and on Friday afternoon the players received their precious Grey Cup rings.”

The website also added “The entire team received their 105th Grey Cup rings at a special ceremony on Friday in Toronto and the final products are absolutely stunning. The inside of each ring includes the final score from the game, as well as the date and the team’s slogan ‘Today Is The Day’, while the front of the ring features a massive Argos logo and 17 diamonds for each Grey Cup title the franchise has won.”
